Hair Thickeners and Concealers
This group of products works by making existing hair appear fuller. This reduces the visibility of the scalp, temporarily combating the effect of thinning hair. Hair loss solutions like this are frequently the subject of ridicule, being referred to as “spray on hair”. However, some of them are surprisingly effective. Concealers are available in a number of different forms:
- Creams- usually thicken the hair with heavy dyes
- Fibers- a powder-like formulation that sticks to the hair via static (Toppik brand is a good example)
- Sprays- dyes, fiber, or a combination of both
Concealers are temporary treatments, and will wash out with regular shampoo. Quality products in this category will not stain clothing, or even be removed by heavy wind and rain. Although I do not have personal experience with any of these products, Toppik is generally the name that comes up as the most advanced concealing agent. It is a keratin-based fiber that binds with your hair via static electricity. Keratin is the substance your hair is made from. The manufacturer recommends that you use hair spray to bond the fibers to your hair for maximum hold. If you have experience with this or other similar products, please share them in our discussion forums.
