Hair Loss Prevention

Male and female pattern baldness are almost entirely caused by genetic factors. This means that without intervention, most people’s hair is preprogrammed to begin falling out at a certain point in their life. Fortunately, many people today are able to slow or even stop hair loss completely. The most proven and effective way to prevent hair loss is through active treatment with Rogaine and Propecia (Propecia is for men only). These medications do have potential side effects. The treatments can be time consuming and expensive. Learn more about in our dedicated Propecia and Rogaine sections.

Nizoral Anti-Fungal Shampoo

A fungus called P. ovale lives on the scalp of every person. Our immune systems attempt to fight off the fungi. One of the side effects is accelerated shedding of skin cells, also known as dandruff. Nizoral is officially a treatment for dandruff, but it has also proven effective in helping to treat hair loss. Nizoral was used on every patient in the FDA trials that proved the effectiveness of Rogaine. It is not known exactly how Nizoral works to combat hair loss, but it does. The anti-fungal action will eliminate dandruff and debris, which can clog hair follicles. It is also thought that the active ingredient in Nizoral, ketoconazole, blocks DHT from binding with the hair follicles. To learn more about DHT see our hair loss types and causes section.

Scalp Stimulation

Many people believe that stimulation of the scalp can prevent hair loss and cause new growth. It is thought that grooming promotes blood circulation to hair follicles, which promotes growth. Articles on this subject offer conflicting advice. Some say use only the finger tips, never fingernails or synthetic brushes. Others say to use only a synthetic soft tipped brush. Personally, I use a soft tipped brush in gentle repetitive strokes. This is what feels right to my scalp, and it seems to pr There is little scientific evidence to back this method for preventing hair loss. However, it is generally thought that massage promotes good circulation. It is unlikely to cause damage, though it may cause weak hairs to fall out in the beginning. These hairs would have most likely fallen out soon anyways.
