Rogaine
Minoxidil is sold under the brand name Rogaine in the Unites States. It is one of only two drugs specifically approved by the FDA to treat hair loss. Rogaine is a clear liquid, which you can buy in three formulations:
- Rogaine Regular Strength for Men- 2% Minoxidil
- Rogaine Extra Strength for Men- 5% Minoxidil
- Rogaine for Women- 2% Minoxidil
Nobody knows exactly how Rogaine works. The makers state on their official website that it works by revitalizing and increasing the size of hair follicles. Typically with androgenetic alopecia, hair follicles shrink and produce shorter, thinner hairs. The exact mechanism is not known, however, numerous studies have proven that Rogaine does stop hair loss and promote new growth in many men.
Rogaine needs to be used twice daily for maximum results. It is very important that you miss as few applications as possible. Usually it takes 4 months of regular use to see any results. Be sure to read the instructions carefully before starting a course of treatment.
Drawbacks of Rogaine
Rogaine is one of the only treatment options with FDA approval and scientific backing. However, there are potential drawbacks to buying and using it:
- In most cases, the new hair growth will only last as long as you continue treatment. If you stop using the product, you can lose all the hair that would have normally fallen out, as well as any new growth.
- Skin irritation or itching occurred in 6% of patients using extra strength (5% Minoxidil) in a study conducted in 1985.
- In rare cases, acne or inflammation can occur at site of application
This information is only a summary of some of the important facts about Rogaine. Always consult your doctor and read the directions carefully before beginning treatment. |
