ScalpMed

Scalpmed, or Scalp Med, is a new hair loss product that has attracted a lot of attention. The manufacturer is running a number of nationwide commercials, and some of Scalpmed's advertisements are not clear on what aspect of Scalp Med is "FDA approved" (it's minoxidil).

The main ingredient in Scalp Med is the same as Rogaine - Minoxidil. The makers of Scalpmed say that their product contains extra ingredients, which make their formula more effective, less greasy, and less irritating than the competition. Some Rogaine users do report scalp irritation which is serious enough to stop treatment.

Before After Pictures

Some of Scalpmed's before/after pictures are very impressive, but Minoxidil and creative camera work could explain these results. Some of the before pictures are taken in different lighting, from different angles than the after pictures. This is always a red flag for me, when looking at hair loss product and transplant sites. Despite this fact, the before and after pictures remain impressive.

Scalp Med's website is somewhat unclear on what the "FDA approved ingredients" are. From what I read, Minoxidil is the only one. On their website, they say that their products detoxify and nourish the scalp, as well as providing a "growth agent".

While the cost of Scalpmed is significantly higher than Rogaine, the pitch is that the product contains other ingredients and is less irritating to the scalp than Rogaine. Here is a cost comparison of Scalp Med and Generic Minoxidil (the generic version of Rogaine).

  • Generic Minoxidil 6 month treatment - $45 - $65 with shipping
  • ScalpMed 6 month hair loss treatment - $435 with shipping

To be fair, the Scalpmed system does come with a hair thickener and nutrient solution in addition to its main hair loss treatment product. However, it seems very expensive to me. If anyone has experience with Scalp Med, please share it in our hair loss discussion forums. Note: This product's official name is Scalpmed, but it is frequently misspelled: Medscalp and Scalp Med.
